Geeking Away...
Published on August 22, 2008 By Leauki In Personal Computing

My first real computer was a COMPAQ Presario CDS 633 (a 486SX/33 with 4 MB RAM). It ran MS-DOS 6.2/Windows 3.1 at first and later OS/2 Warp 3.

I first had to name it when I ran a news (NNTP/Usenet) server on it because OS/2 didn't have an offline news reader. I liked NewsReader/2 (nr2.exe) but I couldn't figure out why IBM believed that home users would be connected to the Internet all day. That was in 1994 and I was on (expensive) dial-up.

So I named it gopher.gopher.org. The name was only relevant for news articles anyway.

The name "Gopher" travelled from computer to computer until I had two computers in 1998. The last computer named "Gopher", a 1997 Pentium 200 running OS/2 Warp 4 is still in use by my dad for Microsoft Word 5.5 (which ran natively on OS/2!).

Starting then the slower computer would be "Cassidy" and the faster computer "Sundance". In 2001 my Power Mac G4/450x2 (dual processor) was Sundance and my UMAX S900 PowerPC 604e/233 was "Cassidy". And in the kitchen I had a server that was connected via cable going through a hole in the wall. It was named "Holeinthewall". The two clients connected to it I named the "Holeinthewall Gang".

I bought an iBook G3/600 which I named "Flyer". It is still with me, although the hard disk is broken.

In 2004, after I had moved to Ireland again, I bought an iMac G5 and named it "Hokem" (Hebrew for "wise man" and Yiddish for "wiseguy"). Two years later I bought an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and named it "Xerxes" after the Iranian king.

And this year I finally added a new (white) Macbook named "Blacky".

I have three external hard disks: one 160 GB called "Databank", one 500 GB called "Opposition", and one that was made in Ireland (by Iomega); it is sort of metallic coloured and I use it for Apple's "Time Machine" backup application, I called it "DeLorean".

My HP PDA is named "Smallpox" (because it is is small, fits in my pocket, and is as useful as a disease).

My iPod Shuffle is named "Shuffeln".

And my iPhone, which was very difficult to register because of how iTunes works in Europe, is named "iCantbelieveit".

I wonder!! Seeing as all my rigs have piratical names, and the next case I'm building can get a tad hot, whether I or not should run it with the sides off - all naked-like - and call it starkers too

My computer is very creatively named MYPC.

Sometimes I call it a doorstop.

This is going to be a truly boring read, but it was fun to recall all the different computers I've had... so I'll write it anyway

The first computer that I owned, a 486 DX-2/50mhz Dell running DOS 5.x and Windows 3.1, was named WOPR (from the movie "War Games"). My main gaming computer at any given year since then has inherited that name. ("Would you like to play a game?")

Other computers around the house are Hitchhiker Guide inspired, given the names of the main computers represented in the books:
Deep Thought
Eddie
Earth

Earth from THGttG somehow spun off a planetary theme in some of my other computers and gave rise to Moon, a laptop (the original one was a Toshiba Satellite...get it?) and now the main PC laptops since then inherit that name. The main Mac desktop sometimes gets named Lisa, an obvious choice for any Apple historians out there, but the past 2 iterations have been planets... usually Venus, mostly because Macs seem more feminine to me for some reason.

A pair of old-world beige G3 towers that I nearly tossed out are now revitilized thanks to Ubuntu and Edubuntu Linux and in use by the rug-rats in the household. I wanted the kids to have internet access, but there was absolutely no way to do that safely using the now-unsupported Mac OS8 and 9 installed on those G3s. Luckily, I learned a bit about what Linux could offer for old and otherwise trash computers, so there are now a Mars and Saturn on the home LAN. Both are planets, continuing the secondary theme in my home network naming convention, but they are also both names of gods of war... which somehow fits given that my two sons are always fighting between themselves.

P.S. I've a recent Vista laptop (a tablet convertible) that seems to be unstable coming out of sleep mode. (Due to the now out-dated ATI Mobility drivers that Gateway hasn't provided an update for going on a year now...and ATI doesn't publish drivers for this particular chipset, and leaves that to the OEMs unfortunately). Anyway, I may rename it to BSOD, for reasons that are clear (at least to me).

With the planets idead you could rename the internet router sol aswell then your computers would orbit round it which they do in a way. Then laptops/external nameable devices are named after the moons of the planets which their owners machins are called (if that makes sense dose to me)

and i just thought ive named my flash drives the 512mb is called gravy boat i got the name from a messed up dream and the 2gb is called data wagon.

any names sugested for my 320gb external hard drive??? please

All my previous computers have been based around starships

I call my current computer Enterprise
And my home network Starfleetcommand

I just call it "mine" but someday I'll change it's name to "landfill"

I always wanted the name WOPR for my first Mac OS X server if I ever buy one. (Get it? WOPR? Big Mac?)

What about Hactar?

Silly me, back in the early-90's... the very first 386DX40 was named WORKGROUP!

I've became a lot more 'complex & intelligent' for anything since by using the obvious; Zyxpsilon.

(If anyone is curious... here's the concept behind the tricky letterings; ZYX stands for the usual 3d coordinates, psi for magic or intellectual 'elements', lon for L_ogged O_n. Throw in a coincidence with Silo and the whole thing is also somehow silly but weird enough.)

I never named the computer but I put another HD in and named it Skynet.

That presumably interfered with the name of the workgroup?

I tend to name mine after my nicknames and/or online persona.  The one I'm on now is currently dubbed Cyndaquil (and the user account when booted into LINUX is Typhlosion). The one in my bedroom is currently Sailorleo, although it will probably be renamed once I get my old computer running again, as it has prior claim to that name.  Most likely it'll end up as either Eefui/Espeon or Blacky/Burakkii/Umbreon.

Network currently is using the default name, but that will probably change.  Haven't bothered to name yet the iPod either.

Hmm...I would just name them My Box or elvee's Box.
