A Leauki's Writings
Dear television station,

with regard to the last show I had the misfortune of watching when I thought I could take in a movie one evening, I feel obligated to tell you how I feel about your current programme.

No, I was not disappointed. That is part of the problem. I am writing to you about this particular show not because it was the worst show I have ever seen but because it was not. And I do not hope that you change anything about the show because I have seen what happens when you do. The current programme is not, of course, a result of stagnation but of progressive change to the much worse.

I know that all stations currently feature this kind of programme, yet I see no value in a show that makes me more angry than commercials for household cleaners with happy kids in them (in the commercials, not the cleaners). One obvious solution would be not to interrupt cleaner commercials with your shows, but I realize this isn't a practical approach for so many reasons.

One way that worked for me was to disconnect my tv set from its power source, and even though this means that I am not, technically, receiving a signal any more, the quality of the programme has only improved.

I do not claim that your show is universally disliked by everyone. I am fully aware of the fact that so many people watch this very show and if not like it still find it more entertaining than talking to their spouses or kids. My point is not about the sad fact that people watch these shows but about the realization that somebody working for a tv station, at some point, apparently realized that people would. And this is the crux of my confusion.

There is this idea, this thought that people would watch such a show; and I can only applaude the genius who came up with it. And even though I am very inclined to apply sarcasm in order to understand the world, I am extremely puzzled regarding one detail.

What triggered that thought?
