The Obama administration has given the Palestinian Authority a "green light" to talk to Hamas about forming a Palestinian unity government, a PA official in Ramallah said over the weekend.
...
"The new administration has a different policy than that of [former US president] George W. Bush," the official told The Jerusalem Post.
[I'll say!]
"The administration of President Barack Obama believes that a Hamas-Fatah government is good for stability."

Apparently Obama misunderstood the point of the peace talks.
We wanted peace between Israel and the Arabs, not peace between two different terrorist groups that both have the goal of destroying Israel and killing the Jews. (The latter might be considered an obstruction to peace by the more cynical observer.)
The fight between Hamas and Fatah was good for peace because it began to isolate the extremists among the Arabs from the rest and gave Fatah and the PLO a chance to be the "good guys", the civilised administration whom one could talk to. Well, Obama made sure that that cannot happen any more.
I can only imagine the outcry if the Israeli government managed to find a group of Jews with goals equivalent of Hamas' ("Kill all Arabs, destroy Egypt. Arabs are dogs and monkies.") and then form a coalition government with them. Being Jews, that group would be accused of being the worst of the worst. Yet Hamas is actually wanted, by Obama, not for crimes against humanity but in a government.
Can anybody tell me why the world insists that the Arabs of Gaza and the West-Bank have to be ruled by terrorists?
We, the world, imposed the PLO on them. Everyone was doing fine until the world (and a soft Israel) decided to get the PLO from Tunisia and install them in the West-Bank to rule over five million people without asking for the people's consent or giving them a choice. That was the same PLO that tried to take over Jordan in the 1970s and then started a civil war in Lebanon a few years later.
When Israel won decisive wars the situation in Gaza and the West-Bank had improved. In the 1980s the territories were among the richest in the world. But then the world insisted on PLO rule in the "occupied territories" and since then the sitiation has deteriorated. What's the point of continuing like this?
Perhaps Obama hates Jews and Arabs, I don't know.
But to me it seems that the sensible solution would be to undo the Oslo peace treaty (which the PLO broke in 2000 anyway*), revert to complete occupation of Gaza and the West-Bank, eliminate the PLO and Hamas from the process and restart from there.
Israel can simply talk to Arab clan leaders in the territories. What do we need the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood (Hamas) or Hitler's Arab allies (the PLO) for? The PLO's leadership can return to Tunisia for all I care or perhaps to Arafat's home town of Cairo.
And Hamas' leadership can burn in hell.
*Contrary to popular myth the Oslo peace treaty did not, technically, allow for a second "Intifada", not even when a Jew walks over the Temple Mount. Unless the other side is Jewish, reinitiating hostilities is considered breaking a cease-fire or a peace treaty. Perhaps international law should have been more clear about this.
