A Leauki's Writings

"Gaddafi has acknowledged our problem. He has invited us all to return to Libya," David Jerbi, one of thousands of Libyan Jews forced to flee the country.

...

"He told us that he was forced (to expel us) and that by doing so he saved our lives because the Libyan people wanted to kill us," said Umberto Robbi, who was expelled in 1970.

"So to save us he also confiscated all our property."

Note that the Italians and Jews were expelled from Libya not after independence from Italy but at the beginning of Arab rule in 1969. This was not, despite what Gaddafi tries to make it, a case of colonial masters being expelled by a newly independent country.

The Jewish community in Libya had been living in the country for a thousand years and longer before the Arabs arrived. Relations between Jews and Berbers (Libyan natives) had been excellent.

The United Nations had set up an organisation to help those Jewish refugees in 1969, financed their lives since, and declared Rome a refugee camp. Just kidding. We (the world) are not paying for Jewish refugees.
