Dick Cheney just came out in favour of gay marriage:

Considering this and George Bush's interview last year where he made it clear that he does not believe in a "literal" reading of the (English translation of) the Bible and his support for teaching evolution rather than religion in science class, I wonder what exactly is "right-wing" about the evil neo-conservatives.
The Bush administration made war against fascist dictatorships, supported Jews and Israel and other minorities in the middle east, stood against religious (Muslim) fundamentalism (although Bush's stance on Saudi-Arabia was less than ideal) and gave hope to black Africans, homosexuals, women, Jews, Christians, and ethnic minorities in the entire "Arab" world.
For this George Bush and Dick Cheney have been roundly condemned by the "left" as fascists, racists, sexists, anti-science Christian fundamentalists, and homophobic morons. The Bush administration were homophobes who support gay marriage, imperialists who tried to break up Arab hegemony over the middle east in favour of the native peoples, sexists who protected women's rights, racists who protected black African slaves in the Sudan from their Arab masters, Nazis who support Israel (and were roundly condemned by white supremacists for it), anti-scientific morons who support the teaching of evolution and reject Creationism, and religious fundamentalists who fought religious fundamentalism.
So what exactly is "right-wing" in the eyes of liberals? And what really are the demands of liberals if not freedom for ethnic minorities, gay rights, equal rights for women, and freedom of religion?
Conservative criticism of George Bush appears to make sense: his administration really wasn't very conservative or right-wing. (And you know what? I don't care.)
But liberal criticism of George Bush appeared and appears to be based on basically just two points:
- Waging war against fascists who gas people is morally wrong. (Although if Obama can get an Israeli-Arab peace treaty out of the fact that the PLO no longer have their powerful Iraqi supporters, what is morally wrong can be used by good people and they can get full credit for it.)
- George Bush is a Christian fundamentalist. (This requires ignoring his vice-president's stance on gay marriage, George Bush's stance on Biblical literalism, and the entire administration's attitude towards other Christian denominations and non-Christian religions including George Bush's open support for Muslims and his connections to India.)
